Captain James Skinner of
61st Bengal Native Infantry
James Skinner (1803-1842) was the son of Lieutenant-General John Skinner C.B. He joined the 61st Bengal Native Infantry in 1825 as an ensign and was promoted to lieutenant the following year.
After several years of regimental service he was appointed a commissariat officer with the 2nd Division of the Army of the Indus and took part in the 1st Afghan War (1839-1842). Promoted to captain in July 1839, Skinner was killed in action at the Jagdalak Pass during the Retreat from Kabul in 1842.
A skilled linguist, Skinner was taken hostage prior to the British withdrawal. During his brief captivity he was forced by his jailers to translate letters into English from Persian and Pashtun.

The Right Honourable Sir John Skinner
Sir John was born in 1725, son of John Skinner Esq of Ledbury and Margaret Browne, and he, like his kinsman Matthew, Chief Judge of Chester and Recorder of Oxford, was a scholar at St Peter’s College, Westminster where he was admitted in 1738. He was elected in 1742 a student of Christ Church, Oxford and in 1750 took his degree, B.C.L. He was admitted a student of Lincoln’s Inn, called to the bar by that society and joined the Oxford Circuit. In 1757 he was one of the counsel present when a stack of chimneys fell through the roof killing many but the 5 members of the counsel saved themselves by taking refuge under the stout table and of these, four -

According to custom Sir John left the Society of Lincoln’s Inn in 1776 on taking the degree of Sergeant at Law and on 1st December of that year was made Lord Baron of the Exchequer and received the honour of knighthood. The following year he resigned the post and in 1778 was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council. After he resigned the office of Lord Chief Baron he retired to the seat inherited from his mother at Witley Court, Great Milton, Oxfordshire.
Sir John died at Bath in 1805 aged 80 and was buried in the vault of his mother’s family in the church of Great Milton, Oxfordshire.
Lieutenat Colonel Thomas Skinner C.B. of 31st Regiment of Foot
Born about 1800, he was son of Lieutenant General John Skinner. He entered the army on 25 January 1816 as an ensign in the 16th Foot; he became lieutenant on 6 August 1819, captain on 9 October 1823, and exchanged into the 31st Foot on 25 March 1824.
Skinner went with his regiment to India shortly before 1826, and was stationed at Hardwar, in the North-West provinces, near the foot of the Himalayas. He made expeditions into little-known mountainous districts, and wrote up his explorations in Excursions in India (London, 1832). After returning home on leave, he went back to India in 1833 by the overland route through Egypt, Syria, and Palestine. He travelled down the Euphrates, and embarked on the Persian Gulf. He published an account of this journey in Adventures during a Journey Overland to India (London, 1836).
On 24 November 1835 Skinner attained the rank of major, and in 1842 he joined the force assembled at Jalalabad under Sir George Pollock for the relief of Kabul. He commanded the 31st Foot in the campaign, and on 26 July 1842 was present at the conflict of Mazeena, near Jalalabad. He accompanied Pollock's advance, and was given the task of clearing the hills on the left of the valley of Tezin in the engagement there on 13 September.
Skinner received for his services the Cross of the Order of the Bath and the Cabul medal, and was gazetted on 23 December to the brevet rank of lieutenant-colonel. He died at Landaur on 6 May 1843, in bad health from the campaign.

Lieutenant General John Skinner of 16th Regiment of Foot
Born on 16th February 1752 Lieutenant General John Skinner served in the army for fifty five years including the American Campaigns of 1779, 1780 and 1781.
In 1795, reducing the revolting Maroons into submission, he saved Jamaica from the fate of St.Domingo.
In 1804 he commanded the 16th Regiment in the expedition against Surinam; and afterwards, while Major General, acted as Governor, in succession, of St Martins, Sainta Cruz and Guadaloup, in the West Indies, at the capture of which latter island, in 1810, he commanded a brigade, and for that service received a gold medal.
